What is Polishing?

What is polishing?

Polishing was sometimes known as finishing or buffing is the process of removing light scratches and abrasions from a surface, and creating the desired brightness of finish on that surface. It is the final stage in the surfacing process. When a material appears shiny you are actually seeing a reflection of light off the material.  When a material appears dull, there are scratches or dirt preventing the light from directly reflecting off the surface.  Clean the material thoroughly, and if it’s still dull then the material needs to be polished.  If the material is heavily scratched, marked or scored then suitable abrasives should be used prior to polishing to remove.  Determine if the material you wish to polish needs to be sanded first.  A good rule of thumb is if your fingernail can catch the edge of a scratch then it will need to be sanded before it can be polished.
